Treatment For Nocturnal Enuresis In Adults

By Jocelyn Davidson

Bed wetting in adults is unsettling and uncomfortable but long lasting solutions are available. Some children experience the difficulty out of genetic formation. This is likely to present a challenge during treatment but does not mean that treatment is impossible. Your primary health care provider conducts initial assessment and makes recommendations based on severity. Treatment restores comfort, self esteem and gives you back your normal life.

The genetic aspect of voiding is likely to make it appear untreatable. The initial stages of treating nocturnal enuresis require close monitoring of your fluid intake later in the day. This means that you avoid drinking water and other fluids later in the afternoon and evening. This will reduce the urge and the need to urinate at night.

Reduction in fluid intake is dangerous for your health. The best behavioral approach is to change the timing to give room for voiding before you go to bed. Bladder volume training is a process where an individual takes enough fluids and restrains from voiding. This is done during the day. Restraining increases the volume of your bladder besides giving you more control on voiding.

Bed wetting alarm system alerts you when you begin voiding. It reacts by vibrating or ringing when the first drop is detected. The device is attached to the underwear or pad in which the victim sleeps. Waking up stops the flow of urine and allows you to complete voiding in the bathroom.

A patient using the alarm system requires commitment and motivation. Getting used to this mechanism requires several days. Its disadvantage lies in reduction of bladder volume which means that you will wake up more often in the night. It has been very effective on several instances some of which were very severe.

The choice of medicines is complemented by behavioral therapy. It comes with the risk of dependency meaning that in order to avoid bed wetting, you have to take the medication. Any medicine taken should be at the prescription of the doctor. This gives the doctor a chance to evaluate your case and determine the dosage.

Surgery is the last option if all others have failed. The idea is to utilize the non invasive options as far as possible. Any surgery should commence after a detailed discussion of side effects. The surgeons alter the orientations of tissues surrounding the bladder in order to regain normal functions.

Management of bed wetting is possible to ensure comfort as you undergo treatment. There are special mattresses that make it easier to clean up in the morning. They come in varieties of water proof, vinyl and absorbent. Sheet protectors ensure that urine does not irritate your skin.

Absorbent briefs are modified under wears that will help you avoid leaks. They come in reusable and disposable versions. If you are prone to irritation, it is worth considering the disposable variety. Skin products are used to avoid damage on the skin through irritation. They range from soaps to lotions as well as skin cleaning agents.
