Problems Facing Teenagers Today In The Modern World

With the economic times becoming harder, it means parental are away at work for longer so as to sustain their families. It is unfortunate that some parents live with their teenage kids under the same roof but barely meet unless during dinner or breakfast. It will not be entirely inaccurate to say that some of the problems facing teenagers today begin at home. This is where they become prey to the negative effects of mainstream mass media, peer pressure many other societal ills.

Teens nowadays are faced with the challenge of having career focused parents who do not pay time to strengthen the teenager-parent bonds. Studies reveal that those with strong parental bonds tend to be less susceptible to the negative influences in the society and avoid destructive and dangerous behavior.

The media is a constant presence that revolves around a teen who is less preoccupied with much in life and thus relies heavily on all its forms for entertainment. They expose themselves to media such as the television, videos, video games, music, books, magazines as well as newspapers. The media nowadays has harmful effects to teens. Those who watch too much television usually have poorer vocabulary and perform dismally in class.

Too much influence of modern media on the teenagers such as on Hollywood material influences them into adopting the stereotypical unrealistic lifestyle fantasies. They tend to detach themselves more from the real world. In the modern media violence is promoted as being cool and acceptable. From movies to video games, the hero usually succeeds when he eliminates his foe in a very violent manner.

Drugs were once revered as being dangerous and highly destructive to ones physical and mental health. Nowadays celebrities flaunt with the drugs openly on mass media. They are available in almost all parties and bashes held and are viewed as cool.

A major exposure the young ones are open to is indulgence in underage sex. There has been a proven link between teen alcoholism and sex. The television also plays a role in promotion of the same. If not well mentored they may be indulging in unprotected intercourse.

There have been increased reports of teenage pregnancies due to such careless behavior. When this occurs the teen will be very disenfranchised by the huge responsibilities that will follow in regard to raising the kid in spite of the parents offering assistance. Focus on academics will take a back seat for a while and this will result in young bright potential future leaders missing out on opportunities that would have popped up were they more committed and focused to their education.

With society putting too much focus on the social dimension of the problems they face, the most basic of problems such as nutrition are more ignored. The number of obese young teens is rapidly on the rise due to poor eating habits. The general shunning of salads and vegetables for more fatty carbs and fast foods results in poor nutrition among the young and exposes them to health risks at the moment as well as in future. Some of this diseases are such as diabetes and cancer. There is a saying that the future is for our kids. However if we do not invest in them, it can only mean that we will not have a future.
