Parents should never pressure a teenager to choose a college. If the teenagers feel that they are being pressured or manipulated, they might react by doing the opposite out of spite.

Even dedicated parents need some time for themselves. Get a friend or family member to take care of your kids, even if it's only for a couple of hours. Parents can get stressed by the constant demands of parenting and need to take the time for themselves to relax, which will have a positive benefit for the entire household.

If you child is teething, chill some pickles, cucumbers or carrots and let your child gnaw on them using a mesh teether. There are many methods that work for relief, but if the item the child is chewing on contains a taste then he will more than likely keep chewing on it. Your child will have more relief from teething pains as they continue to use this teether.

Having positive family rules can help reduce the amount of fighting that goes on in your house, and help your kids get along better with each other. Rather than saying, "no hitting," for instance, tell children to "touch gently."

If becoming a stepparent is on your horizon, keep in mind that it will be a while before you get along with your stepchild. Many kids are resentful that their parents are not together. Take the time to get to know your stepchild and build this link progressively. Do not try to replace one of the parents.

By removing all junk food from your house, you are encouraging healthy eating. If you do not have chips, cookies and candy in the home, your child will be less likely to ask for it. You don't have to ban them for good, but try to save them for special occasions or holidays.

Not every child is an extrovert, and all parents should recognize this. A lot of children are shy, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, you may want to take note if your child appears to unnaturally withdrawn.

Praise the good behavior you see in your children; this is what good parents do. Kids need attention. Children will try their parent's attention by behaving well or behaving badly. Parents who never acknowledge what their children do well may encourage them to behave poorly.

If you are potty training your toddler, make sure that you take him to the bathroom consistently every couple of hours. They haven't quite learned yet how to communicate to you that they need to eliminate and may only do so after it's too late. Taking your child to potty every few hours is the best way to prevent accidents from occurring. These usually signals to him that it's time go.

Give your child plenty of opportunities to develop his or her senses. The smells of cooking, the feel of mud, and the colors of paint can all help your child become more involved with the world. Always look for items that have unique colors, tastes and textures that you could give to your child.

Children at this stage need to learn that they cannot always be the center of attention; remedy this by teaching them to wait until it is their turn to speak or act. If your kids are particularly disobedient, consider placing them in a "time-out" as a means of discipline.
