Learning About Children And Foster Families WA

By Ann Lewis

Children around the country who have been affected by things like abuse are in desperate need of foster care. There are thousands of kids waiting for homes. However, it is important that they find the right homes to go to. One often hears horror stories about children and foster families WA, and this is why social workers, these days are more careful about choosing the right family.

Unfortunately, there are those families who will be after the money more than the child. This is the reason why a child is unhappy, not being provided with the right sort of care and attention. Not only have they had a bad start in their life, but it continues in this fashion. However, these days, social workers will provide the family with a series of questionnaires and tests.

Of course, this will vary from one child to the next. This is human life. It is not a puppy that you are looking after from a rescue center, so you need to keep this in mind. There are foster parents who are very casual about this approach and it leads to the child having major problems later on in life. Of course, they usually will struggle, especially when they are shoved from one home to the next.

Foster families will need to realize that the child has been through a rough time, and need to provide them with a lot of love and care. This is not something that they have been exposed to before. Usually, they would be physically or sexually abused. Emotionally abused children will also be waiting for homes. These kids often have trust issues and take time to connect with the family.

Kids won't necessarily connect with you overnight. It takes time because of what they have been through. Older children may start to rebel because they would probably have been shoved from one home to the next. Other younger kids will often have trust issues because of the abuse that they have been through.

Many agencies allow foster parents to select certain children. However, one has to consider the situation. There are teenagers who are older and waiting for a home as well. Many of them need guidance and direction until they are old enough to go their own way. It can be rewarding to be able to teach them, knowing that you can provide them with some teaching.

However, this is the limit and kids are free to make their own choices after this age. It can be nerve wracking taking the project on when you are new to this. Some kids are affected to less of a degree, so one may want to think of requesting a child who is younger or less rebellious. This can happen.

One has to expect that the child is going to rebel because of what they have been through. However, this usually happens with older kids or with teens. It is not all plain sailing. They may act this way because they have been too so many homes and this is their way of responding to you, as the foster parents, giving you the sign that they are unwilling to build a relationship.
