The idea of taking children to preschool began in the 19th century in the Kingdom of Hungary. Theresa Brunszvik, opened more than eleven child care establishments around that time in the kingdom. Soon, the idea of preschool became popular among members of the middle class and it spread throughout the kingdom. It later spread throughout Europe and then worldwide.

Wisconsin is the place the first ever kindergarten was opened within the United States in 1856. The language used for teaching was German. However, with the establishment of another kindergarten in 1860 by Peabody, English replaced German. Later on in 1870, Conrad Poppenhusen opened the first free kindergarten. Funding of kindergartens was mostly by private funds at the time. This stopped, with the opening of a publicly funded pre-K in St. Louis.

According to research findings, the first few years after a child is born are very significant to the learning process. Compared to later years of development, the rate and ability to absorb knowledge is highest during these years. Part of the reason for this is that the brain develops at the highest rate at this time. As a result, learning ability of a child in the future can be highly enhanced by being exposed to good teachers in preschool.

The mode of teaching and subjects covered in preschools vary from one facility to another. However, there are certain general themes that prevail in all preschools. These themes include emotional, economic, social and personal development, communication, listening and talking, play, self-help skills, mathematics awareness, creative and aesthetic development, literacy, and scientific thinking.

Standards imposed on preschools vary from one jurisdiction to another. These standard are meant to govern various aspects of learning in these facilities such as administration, curriculum, class size, assessment, teacher-student ratio, teacher-student interaction, standards, classroom environment, and services. Curriculums are made specific to children of different ages. Facilities are different in the areas of study they give more emphasis to.

The benefits of preschools to children has been met with a lot of controversy. There are researchers who say that education in preschool is beneficial, while others consider it detrimental. Another group of researchers consider this education both beneficial as well as detrimental in different ways. Benefits have been found in the area of reading and mathematics while negative impact is in social and cooperation skills.

There is enormous amount of ongoing research into determination of the importance of preschool in children. The research has resulted into the formulation of several different methods of teaching. Among the most common ones are Forest Kindergarten, Head Start, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia approach, HighScope, Bank Street, and Montessori.
